Lifting partner

A college friend, Scott VanDraska, is partnering with me on lift days. He is a former bodybuilder and expert on isolation technique. Today we worked shoulders. Very important for the swimming portion. I felt very fatigued at the end of the session. Quick recovery is becoming crucial to my day to day workouts. One hour stationary bike ride wrapped up the evening. Hopefully tomorrow I can do chest and core conditioning.

  1. Just finished a great book regarding this topic. Isolation training is great for bodybuilders, but remember to focus on compound lifts that emphasize "functional training." Compound lifts (multiple joint instead of single joint) are superior for increasing athletic performance and elicit a greater endocrine response because they are physically more demanding. Isolation often over-emphasizes "mirror muscles" and usually require a minimal work capacity. Bodybuilders rely on isolation exercises for cosmetic purposes, not to optimize functional strength. Famous bodybuilder Milos Sarcev summed it up best when asked about whether bodybuilders are athletes. He replied, "We are not athletes, we are athletic mannequins." So, train to be an athlete!

  2. Thanks for the great advice. I'm definitely looking for performance and power. Using the isolation to rehabilitate and strengthen right shoulder and back.
